About John Pearse Strings

John Pearse Strings are manufactured by Breezy Ridge® Instruments, Ltd., a small company located in Center Valley, PA. The company was founded in 1980 by British guitarist, folk singer and music educator John Pearse and dulcimist and guitarist Mary Faith Rhoads.

John Pearse was a popular studio musician and record producer in the 1960s and 1970s. He rose to prominence in the 1960s when a BBC television producer invited him to write and host a guitar lesson series on television. The very successful BBC series,”Hold Down a Chord” was later televised in most US markets as “String Along”.

In 1965, Pearse began working with British Music Strings, Ltd., a London string manufacturer, to develop a product line of high-quality guitar strings. Pearse’s designs were so successful, British Music Strings and the highly regarded German manufacturer Thomastik, marketed string sets under his name.

In 1978 John Pearse moved to the US to develop unique guitar accessories for C.F. Martin Company. While at Martin, Pearse met American dulcimist Mary Faith. They performed on tour and recorded folk music together. After leaving Martin in 1980, John and Mary started Breezy Ridge® Instruments, Ltd., initially to produce John’s uniquely designed Breezy Ridge Hammer Dulcimer. They later expanded their offerings to include John Pearse professional guitar strings. Reception of the specially designed strings was very favorable, which has led to an ever expanding product line, worldwide distribution and growth of the company to this day.

John and Mary ultimately married in 1986, but later divorced. Mary Faith married Spafford Lewis and John Pearse married Linda Gibbard in 1994. In 2002, John handed over much of the running of Breezy Ridge Instruments to Mary Faith Rhoads and moved his family to Besigheim, Germany.

John Pearse died in October 2008 in Germany after years of ill-health. He is survided by both his wives, Mary Faith Rhoads-Lewis and Linda Pearse. Spafford Lewis died in 2013.

Mary Faith remains a driving force at Breezy Ridge, with the company now celebrating 35 years of operation.
